De Bortoli Chill Bill
 
On a Friday morning in Jan 2024 (I have found the email evidence of my keenness) I was looking through a price list from one of our suppliers. In the Australia section was ‘De Bortoli Chill Bill Spritzy Red- coming soon’. No picture. No tasting note. But my interest was peaked. I googled it and saw the label and I was SOLD (hence the very keen email to our rep to get more details). A penguin, a surfboard, palm trees, guitars. Yes, to the whole lot. The person that was not was Dad. I think it is fair to say it was a pretty hard no. With some gentle persuasion over the next few weeks, he said we could try it but with very little enthusiasm or belief.
 
Fast forward two and a half years and it has pretty consistently been in our top 5 wines sold in the town shop ever since. Even in winter it retains it’s place at the top. It is safe to say that Malton loves Chill Bill and I am not at all smug about it (ok, maybe just a little bit).
But the journey of Chill Bill continues when we had the absolute pleasure of having Olly Smith in the shop on a Tuesday morning in June. Having done a brilliant event with him the night before, it was so lovely of him to pop in and see us. He had a little browse and just as he was leaving he happened to spot our favourite penguin:
 
OS: ‘I am doing a feature on chilled reds, what’s this one like?’
AD: ‘Loved by all who try it, it has been such a successful wine for us’
OS: ‘I’m going to email the producer now, I can’t promise but let’s see’
AD: Brain exploding, trying to remain cool calm and collected – ‘Oh that would be amazing’
 
Off Olly goes about his day, not knowing that he has made my entire life just by trying to get one of our wines on the telly. Half an hour later a call comes through from the BBC asking us to send some samples as they are going to feature it and give our tiny little shop in Malton a shoutout on national telly. Holey moley, what a flipping morning for me and this little penguin.
 
So here we are, five weeks later, the day before the penguin gets its moment that it very much deserves. To celebrate we have some absolute cracking deals for you but first, for those who have not had the pleasure of trying this summery hit, what actually is it?
 
Well, it is a medium bodied, juicy, fruity red with a sweetness that means the chilling is essential but also delicious. It is spritzy – not quite as sparkling as sparkling wine but definitely a noticeable fizz as you pour it into your glass.  It is also lighter on the ABV, at 9.5%, making it an excellent lunchtime sip. This is a fun wine that should not be taken seriously. The ultimate party wine to share with friends in the sunshine (which is exactly how we were drinking it last weekend). Pizza is also an excellent accompaniment or BBQ ribs.
